Last month while most of the US was under heavy blankets of snow and ice, I flew to Dallas. I was hoping to find warm temperatures and lots of sun. And if I couldn’t find any, I’d create my own with my sister, Caitlin’s help. Thompson’s WaterSeal asked me to design a dream deck and told me to bring an assistant. Normally I work alone, but when I need help with design and décor I know I can always count on Caitlin. Some of you may remember when Caitlin and I worked together on renovating this beach condo. Caitlin is the talented designer behind Symmetry Designs.
When we arrived, the weather was mild, but we were still craving some warm sunshine. We decided to create a Bali getaway destination on our Thompson’s WaterSeal Deck. We started with a clean slate deck pre-stained with Thompson’s WaterSeal Semi-Transparent Water Proofing Stain in a beautiful Acorn Brown color.
Joining us were Beckie from Infarrantly Creative with her assistant Erin and Ashley & Jamin from The Handmade Home. They also had a blank slate deck to design.
The first thing Caitlin and I did was paint a giant white mandala “tattoo” on our deck.
I toned down the “tattoo” by sanding it and added a second coat of the Thompson’s WaterSeal stain. You can view my tutorial for applying Thompson’s WaterSeal Waterproofing Deck Stain here.
After the stain dried, we began adding our furniture and accessories. The show stopper was this romantic pergola we made using three trellises from Lowe’s Home Improvement. (Yes, I promise to give you a tutorial soon.)
Hanging from the pergola were several little glass lanterns from World Market and an old light fixture I picked up from our local Habitat ReStore.
The fabrics are two white striped curtains and one colorful shower curtain from World Market.
The blue satin pillows and chevron pillow are from Walmart.com. The elephant pillow is from Overstock.com. Beige cushions were found at Lowe’s Home Improvement.
Speaking of Lowe’s, we scored this adorable little garden stool for $39 from the garden section at Lowe’s! The stool got a few coats of turquoise spray paint. The candle and pot were thrift store finds. Orchid stem and little green vase are from World Market.
The chaise loungers are from IKEA. We bought two and slid them together (for a tight side-by-side fit we had to remove the two wheels closest to one another.) The little brass planter was a thrift store find. And the turquoise filigree lantern was originally from Pottery Barn, but we spray-painted it copper and added rub n’ buff patina to it.
On the other side of the deck we created a little area to enjoy tropical drinks.
The shepherds hook (spray painted copper) and wire lanterns are from Lowe’s. I love those lanterns and they collapse to save space! The blue and black pot is from Lowe’s and filled with river rock to support the hook and lanterns. Bistro table and chairs are from Overstock, but we spray painted the chairs different colors. Tablecloth is another World Market curtain panel.
